Een Ierse Setter is officieel een jachthond, vooral voor de jacht op vogels, een zogenaamde "staande hond" afkomstig uit Ierland. Hij is van gemiddelde grootte: 57-63 cm. schofthoogte met middellang mooi rood-bruin tot mahonierood haar met een mooie zijdeachtige glans. Wat wij echter willen zeggen over wat een Ierse Setter is, is het volgende: De Ierse Setter is een wondermooie hond, de verpersoonlijking van de liefde zelve. Een Setter is enorm lief, intelligent, dus ook wat koppig. Onze eerste Setter "Rakker", daar trokken onze twee kleine kinderen zich aan op om te leren lopen, iets wat de hond wel pijn deed, dat getrek van een klein kind aan zijn borsthaar. Een Ierse Setter weet als geen andere hond uw emoties, verdriet, eenzaamheid, ziekte te herkennen en komt u spontaan troosten. Hij is bijzonder en met een hoge empathie begaafd !
Een Ierse Setter is daarnaast ook een zeer vrolijke hond die u zeer vaak aan het lachen brengt. Agressie is hem totaal vreemd. Kortom een Ierse Setter is een allemansvriend en op de eerste plaats van kinderen. Hij kan zeer enthousiast zijn maar is zeer voorzichtig met gehandicapte kinderen. Hoewel hij een jachthond is, kan hem geleerd worden vriendschap te sluiten met een kat of met andere huisdieren.
Er zijn twee types Setters: de meest gekende (vooral in België en in Nederland) "showdieren" of "schoonheidsdieren". Deze zijn iets groter, robuuster, minder atletisch en hebben dikker en/of langer haar. Het andere type is de "échte jachthond", de "werkhond", zoals hij oorspronkelijk uit Ierland kwam. Deze is iets kleiner, zoals onze "Dioniso" of zelfs een stuk kleiner zoals onze "Norma". Deze dieren zijn erg actief, hebben een sterker jachtinstinct, zijn veel atletischer hebben korter haar en minder haar aan hun oren maar voorts zijn ze zeker identiek qua lief karakter !
